Know your leather.

A short guide to four common kinds of leather, so you know what to look for and how each will wear.

Full-grain

The outer layer of the hide with its natural grain left intact. It shows the marks of the animal and develops a patina with use.
Top-grain

The surface is lightly sanded or corrected and usually finished, giving a smoother, more even look than full-grain.
Suede

Made from the underside of the hide and brushed to a soft nap. It feels velvety but is more sensitive to water and stains.
Nubuck

The grain side buffed to a fine, short nap. Soft to the touch, and it marks more easily than smooth leather.

Looking after leather.

General care that helps most leather goods last. Always check any care label first.

Keep it away from heat. Radiators and long spells in direct sun can dry leather out and fade its colour.
Wipe, don't soak. Clean smooth leather with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth, then let it dry naturally.
Condition now and then. Use a conditioner made for the type of leather, and test it on a hidden area first.
Brush suede and nubuck. Use a soft brush to lift the nap, and keep both away from water where you can.
Let it breathe. Store leather in a cotton dust bag rather than plastic.
